And we are back in action! It has been awhile since our last UX Case Study so that I will give a brief refresher for our returning readers and an intro for the uninitiated. That is the elevator pitch at least. In the past, we have conducted UX reviews of apps ranging from Bumble to Overcast , Duolingo to Venmo , covering mobile experiences of all sizes, sectors, and levels of quality. You can see a complete list of the UX Case Study series at the bottom of this page. However, for this instalment of UX Case Study , we will be doing something a bit different. Rather than a single platform, we will be pitting two against each in a contest of user experience. Moreover, what better way to start with two of the largest, polarising mobile platforms on the market today: Spotify and Apple Music.
Music sharing needs a new awakening, and it starts with us. Vinyl sales, which in recent years have once again become popular, have increased in revenue — but lagging way behind other forms of distribution. It is clear that streaming music has become a primary source of how we access music. But what are we listening to and how are we discovering it? Disclaimer: This is a speculative project.
Spotify is a digital music, podcast and video streaming service with over 30 million songs, million monthly active users and 50 million paying subscribers. The Research Plan was created in order to help define the target market and to discover their views on music and music sharing. Next, I conducted primary research through 70 online surveys and 3 in-person interviews. Users need a very easy and seamlessly designed way to share music with others. In order to understand my key users better, I created a primary persona, primary persona empathy map and a secondary persona. Next, I created a UX Strategy Blueprint to clearly define the challenges of the project and to devise a way to overcome those challenges towards a specific outcome. There are two main features I will introduce to Spotify. The first is a Stream. Streams are 24 hour playlists similar to "Stories" on Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook compiled by your friends. Streams appear at the top of your Spotify homepage and can be easily added from any playing screen.
